Ok, so you're going to have another go at losing weight in 2010. How long will it last, when will you get sick and give up. Too many trying to lose weight don't make it because....

a/ You want it to drop off fast, Think about it, how long did it take you to put it on and why is it staying on.

b/ The dieting regime is too strict, you don't allow yourself any favourite food or drink.

c/ You're just not in the mindset to continue for the time it is going to take to be the weight you want to be.

This is the cause of many failing, you really have to want to lose weight, with a passion. You have to imagine yourself slim, getting into skinny jeans and tight fitting tops without an overflow of flesh. Imagine the admiring glances, yup. even sheer jealousy.

It’s a trite but true refrain, that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For most of us, it’s been about 12 hours since our last meal and our bodies need a good refuelling. Yet, statistics show that as many as 50% of us don’t eat breakfast. We’re too busy. We don’t like breakfast foods. We’re not hungry. We’re trying to lose weight.

Sad to say, none of those reasons are valid. There are many healthy breakfasts that can either be bought or made that are fast and even portable. There’s no law that says you have to eat breakfast foods for breakfast. You legitimately might not feel hungry in the morning, particularly if you aren’t accustomed to eating breakfast. But you should eat something, even if you make a fairly light choice, like fruit and yogurt. Trying to lose weight is the worst excuse of all for not eating breakfast. Study after study shows that people who skip breakfast end up eating more the rest of the day than people who eat a solid breakfast every morning.

So how do you get the magical mix of the right nutrients that will give you energy and send you healthfully into your day?
It’s not that hard, really. Spend a little bit of time thinking about what you like and then plan some healthy breakfasts. Here are some ideas to get you started:
If you need something portable, the ever-popular smoothie is ideal, using skimmed milk and favourite fruits or a protein drink, just get something inside to start off the metabolism. You can't run on empty, the engine won't start.

Breakfast might be the easiest meal to fill up without using a lot of calories or fat. Have oatmeal with soy milk, or a high-fibre cold cereal. Consider a homemade version of a fast-food sandwich. You can fry up an egg, add a slice of Canadian bacon and put the two into a toasted English muffin for a 200-calorie, filling breakfast.

So, we sorted breakfast, what about the rest of the day, week, month. It's so true that when you start a diet, all you seem to think about is food, right? Planning to eat, when to eat, shopping to eat, cooking and preparing to eat, WOAH, it just isn't necessary.

There is a billion dollar industry out there, and guess what, they don't want you to lose the fat, get slim, be the weight you want to be. They want you to be fat, why? so they can go on selling you all these faddy diets.

Why has Weight Watchers changed their diet plans so many times, they go with the latest fad. First it was high protein, then low carb, then low fat. Uh huh. They get you to your target and then you go on maintenance, just so they can keep you attending classes, paying your fees and buying their products. Come on, it isn't rocket science.

You are what you are, not what you eat, it is in your DNA. Some people can eat and drink all day and not put on an ounce, they aren't banging away at the gym or running their legs off either. Exercise is good for you though and a nice brisk walk can be very enjoyable, so can dancing your head off in the front room to a good dance fitness video. Who says it has to be hard, sweaty slog, muscle burning agony. Everybody loves to dance, it makes you feel good and how many times have you been miserable on the dance floor. See, your thinking now, aren't you.

I did some research on people I knew who were graced with permanent slimness. In the main, they ate when they were hungry but they didn't eat huge meals, they tended to have small meals but more often. They all ate breakfast and I mean all.

If they had eaten at 7am, their next meal would be at 10am, and would be a snack of crackers and cheese or a banana. They would eat again between 1pm -2pm, taking a sandwich, egg, tuna, cheese, some salad, tomato. The next meal would be around 6pm when this would be a cooked meal of a meat, fish or chicken, with potatoes and two or three vegetables. They may replace this with rice or pasta with a sauce. The one thing that became clear was, everything they ate was usually fresh produce, very little processed foods, frozen or packaged was on the menu. In between the snacks, they would eat an apple or some other fruit. AND no, it doesn't take longer to prepare a meal from fresh food.

The majority lead normal social lives, enjoying going out for a drink, having the occasional fast food meal. None of them were constantly thinking about food, they sorted out their meals for that day or planned ahead when doing their shopping. They all loved to eat and that is the difference. They weren't frightened to eat, they weren't paranoid that the next morsel they put into their mouths was going to add pounds..They enjoyed their food but so did their body, it was being well maintained, refuelled often, so it was able to do its' own job properly and burn fat for heat and energy. Their metabolism kicked off in the morning and just kept going all day, keeping the energy levels high. They tended to sleep better too.

They all tended to be more busy and active people, they were happier people, able to concentrate and focus better, had less tendency to be stressed or depressed.
